PM Shehbaz Meets COAS Asim Munir: Discussions on Security and Democratic Transition

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met with Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Asim Munir on March 6, 2024, at the Prime Minister’s House in Islamabad. The meeting, which marked Shehbaz’s assumption of office as the country’s 24th prime minister, focused primarily on discussions regarding operational and security-related matters concerning the army. Shehbaz’s victory in the election, securing his second term as prime minister, highlights his prominent role in Pakistan’s political landscape. Despite facing opposition challenges, Shehbaz managed to secure victory with support from various parties, including PPP, MQM-P, PML-Q, BAP, PML-Z, IPP, and NP. During the meeting, the army addressed allegations of interference in the electoral process, emphasizing the importance of adhering to due legal processes. The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) clarified the armed forces’ stance of non-involvement in electoral affairs and urged evidence-based discourse over baseless allegations. Furthermore, the corps commanders expressed satisfaction with the democratic transition and expressed hope for political and economic stability in Pakistan’s future.
