The top leadership of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has intervened to halt the Punjab chapter’s efforts to forge an electoral alliance with the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) for the upcoming Senate elections in Punjab.
Despite a proposal from the PPP’s Punjab chapter suggesting collaboration with PTI on women and technocrat seats in Punjab, the party’s central leadership has quashed the idea. This decision follows a conditional offer from PTI to a special committee of the PPP, with PTI seeking PPP’s support for Yasmin Rashid.
In response, PPP reportedly offered to back Faiza Malik for women’s seats. However, the party’s top brass has directed the Punjab chapter to prioritize an alliance with political allies Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) over PTI.
This strategic shift underscores the dynamic nature of pre-election alliances and the PPP’s recalibration of its political strategy in Punjab. As the Senate election approaches, the party appears to be aligning its electoral tactics with the interests of its traditional allies, signaling a potential realignment in the political landscape of the province.
