In a full court reference honoring retired Supreme Court judge Justice Sardar Tariq Masood, Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa reiterated the importance of judges maintaining fearlessness in the face of powerful influences. The reference served as an opportunity to recognize Justice Masood’s significant contributions to the judiciary and to express gratitude for his service.

CJP Isa highlighted Justice Masood’s potential impact as chief justice of the Lahore High Court, noting the province’s loss due to his absence from that position. However, he emphasized the Supreme Court’s benefit from Justice Masood’s presence. The CJP also referenced a critical decision made by the Lahore High Court, which could have derailed general elections, underscoring the Supreme Court’s subsequent intervention to uphold the rule of law.

Addressing concerns about Justice Masood’s involvement in a military courts case, the CJP dismissed them, affirming the judge’s integrity and commitment to legal principles.

Justice Sardar Tariq Masood, in his remarks, stressed the importance of judicial independence extending beyond mere separation from the administration. He urged judges to remain fearless in the face of influential pressures, cautioning against compromising independence for acceptance by powerful circles.

The full court reference featured speeches by Attorney General for Pakistan Mansoor Usman Awan, along with presidents of the Pakistan Bar Council and the Supreme Court Bar Association, who commended Justice Masood’s dedication and service to the judiciary.

This event served as a tribute to Justice Sardar Tariq Masood’s exemplary career and unwavering commitment to justice and integrity. His legacy will continue to inspire legal professionals as they uphold the rule of law and defend judicial independence in Pakistan.
