The 45-year-old is one of an estimated 700,000 workers who have been laid off in recent years as a result of the closure of approximately 1,600 garment companies in crisis-hit Pakistan. This equates to one-third of the country’s textile manufacturers, which account for 60% of overall export revenues.

Mr Maseeh began doing manual labor and operating an autorickshaw after being put off from his job at a factory that produced clothing for big fashion labels earlier this year.
