Rate this post

The United States has emphasized the need for a thorough investigation into challenges and irregularities identified in Pakistan’s recent general elections. State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller stated that the American government seeks to see all issues brought forward by political parties fully addressed through a transparent investigative process.

Miller acknowledged that while the elections were competitive and witnessed significant voter participation, concerns regarding irregularities persist. He underscored the importance of addressing these concerns to uphold the integrity of the electoral process and ensure the voices of the electorate are heard.

Furthermore, when questioned about the state of press freedom in Pakistan, particularly in light of recent restrictions on journalists and calls for social media bans, the spokesperson reiterated Washington’s commitment to freedom of expression. Miller emphasized the condemnation of government-imposed shutdowns of internet platforms and stressed the importance of respecting fundamental freedoms in engagements with Pakistani officials.

Regarding the formation of the new government in Pakistan, Miller reiterated the U.S.’s commitment to its longstanding partnership with the country. While refraining from direct commentary on Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, he affirmed that Washington will continue working with the new government to advance shared interests and support Pakistan’s democratic progress.

The statements from the State Department signal Washington’s continued engagement with Pakistan and its commitment to promoting democracy, transparency, and freedom of expression in the region.
