A court in Pakistan has denied bail to former Prime Minister Imran Khan, who is currently detained and facing charges related to leaking state secrets. The charges stem from an alleged disclosure of a classified cable sent to Islamabad by Pakistan’s ambassador to the United States last year, which Khan is accused of making public.

Imran Khan, a former cricket star, has consistently denied these allegations, asserting that the contents of the cable had already appeared in the media from other sources.

Khan’s lawyer, Naeem Panjutha, confirmed that the Islamabad High Court rejected Khan’s request for bail and for the case to be dismissed. He further mentioned that they intend to challenge this decision.

Imran Khan has been at the center of significant political turmoil in Pakistan, which has raised concerns about the powerful military’s influence over civilian politics. In 2022, Khan was removed from office after losing a vote of no confidence in parliament. He alleged that the military was attempting to sideline him due to disagreements about top security appointments.

The military, which has a substantial history of direct rule in Pakistan and influencing civilian governments, denied involvement in Khan’s removal from office.

Imran Khan claims that the cable he is accused of leaking is evidence of a U.S. conspiracy to persuade the military to oust him following his visit to Moscow just before Russia invaded Ukraine. Both the United States and the Pakistani military have denied this allegation.

Khan has faced numerous legal cases, which he views as attempts to keep him out of politics. While he was convicted in one corruption case and sentenced to three years in prison, the sentence was suspended. Nevertheless, he remains in detention in connection with other cases.

Due to his conviction, Khan, known for his conservative and nationalistic agenda, is unable to participate in the upcoming general election, which is expected to be held early next year.
