In January 2023, Azam Khan assumed the role of Caretaker Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa after an agreement between the then Chief Minister Mehmood Khan and opposition leader Akram Khan Durrani. This transition was prompted by a consensus to nominate the experienced bureaucrat for the CM position.

Condolences are pouring in from various quarters. President Dr. Arif Ali expressed profound sympathy, while Punjab Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi conveyed heartfelt condolences to Azam Khan’s family. Mohsin Naqvi emphasized the disheartening loss, acknowledging Azam Khan’s enduring contributions to the nation and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, which will be eternally cherished.
